Horseback riding
The varied landscapes of Reunion Island offer many idyllic settings for horseback riding. The bridle paths, traced and marked by the NFB and the Maison de la Montagne, will take you between the casuarina trees, the tamarind, the chokes and Vacoas. Walk, trot or gallop, you can taste at all speeds depending on your level and riding across the landscape: Plaine des Cafres, Plaine des Sables on the massive volcano, near Great Pond in East or the western beaches.

Places of Practice

- For beginners
If this is your first time out on horseback, even without experience, equestrian tourism centers offer short rides, ranging from an hour to half a day. These short hikes will allow you to discover la Plaine des Cafres or ride around Grand Etang under a different perspective.

- For horse-riding enthusiasts
The volcano, la Plaine des Cafres, Grand Etang, a ride across the mountains of the West coast, the "fake volcano" in les Avirons (a former quarry); the beach in Etang-Sal้; Bras Canot in the East.

- For confirmed riders
Several day expeditions, with nights in gites, are possible, especially in the volcano area, in the West and the East.

For the record
Probably introduced in the island in the early eighteenth century, horses were mainly used for transporting people and goods. A few years later, around 1830, a so-called Mr. Fisicat gave the first riding lessons in St. Denis.
The Merens, a native horse of the Pyrenees Ariegeoises, known for its easygoing and frank temperament, its agility, sturdiness and rustic character, is the most used riding horse in Reunion. All the climates of the island suit him and he will take you hosre-trekking safely, even if you are a beginner.
